About Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation

What is Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation?

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation (JNER) is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal that aims to foster the publication of research work that results from cross-fertilization of the fields of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and physical medicine & rehabilitation.

During the past decade, we have witnessed profound changes in physical medicine & rehabilitation originated by advances in neuroscience and biomedical engineering. For example, imaging and neurological assessment methods have dramatically improved the management of patients with motor impairments; robotics and artificial muscle research have generated revolutionary concepts in orthotics and prosthetics; and advances in cortical recordings and the understanding of central nervous system mechanisms have changed the way clinicians look at movement disorders. These techniques and others have brought about, and will continue to give rise in the future to, dramatic advances in physical medicine & rehabilitation. JNER aims to provide a forum for researchers and clinicians interested in understanding the way neuroscience and biomedical engineering are continuing to reshape physical medicine & rehabilitation.

As advances in neuroscience and biomedical engineering continue to generate new techniques, with tremendous impact in the field of physical medicine & rehabilitation, it becomes apparent that there is an urgent need for establishing an outlet for the intersection of these three research fields. JNER aims to provide such an outlet, hosting the introduction of new methods and the discussion of their clinical implications, and offering an opportunity to publish, in a timely manner, articles relevant to the cross-fertilization of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and physical medicine & rehabilitation.

Content overview

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation considers the following types of articles:

  • Research - reports of original research on circadian rhythms.
  • Commentaries - short, focused and opinionated articles on any subject within the scope of the journal. These articles are usually related to a contemporary issue, such as recent research findings, and are often written by opinion leaders invited by the Editorial Board.
  • Methodology articles - present a new experimental method, test or procedure. The method described may either be completely new, or may offer a better version of an existing method. The article must describe a demonstrable advance on what is currently available.
  • Reviews - comprehensive, authoritative descriptions of any subject within the scope of the journal. These articles are usually written by opinion leaders invited by the Editorial Board.

Peer review policies

  • Manuscripts submitted to Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation (JNER) are assigned to an Associate Editor (or a member of the Editorial Board), who is responsible for designating three reviewers in order to assess the scientific quality of the submitted material.
  • The reviewers' comments will be considered by the Associate Editor (or member of the Editorial Board) assigned to the manuscript, and the Editor-in-Chief and a final decision on publication will be made. They consider the quality of the manuscript from a scientific standpoint and its importance and significance in view of the scope of JNER, namely to foster scientific contributions at the intersection of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and physical medicine & rehabilitation. Manuscripts of particular relevance to this standpoint will be given prominence in the publication process.

Edited by Paolo Bonato, Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation is supported by an expert Editorial Board.

Publishing in Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation

All articles are listed in PubMed immediately upon acceptance (after peer review), and are covered by PubMed Central, MEDLINE, Thomson Reuters (ISI) and Embase.

Articles in Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. However, because articles in this journal are not printed, they do not have page numbers. Instead, they have a unique article number.

The following citation:

J NeuroEngineering Rehabil 2004, 2:1

refers to article 1 from volume 2 of the journal.

As an online journal, Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation does not have issue numbers. Each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

To keep up to date with the latest articles from Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, why not register to receive alerts? Registration also enables you to customise your subject areas of interest, store your searches, and submit your manuscripts.

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation using the online submission system. Full details of how to submit a manuscript are given in the instructions for authors.

General journal policies

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation is published by BioMed Central, part of Springer Science+Business Media. BioMed Central is committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is open access. That means it is freely and universally accessible online, it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free access repository, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the BioMed Central copyright and licence agreement. Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation however, has taken this further by making all its content open access.

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation's articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications. The journal is also participating in the British Library's e-journals pilot project, and plans to deposit copies of all articles with the British Library.

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation is able to deliver summaries of frequently updated content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds. These are accessible via the orange "XML" button at the top of the list of recent articles or the list of most accessed articles. For more information about RSS feeds see our publisher's website.

If you would like to help raise awareness of Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, why not download the journal's leaflet and poster? You will need Acrobat Reader to open them.
